Mini gets tougher: Frederic Manby previews the latest baby BMW.

This Countryman version of the Mini will go on sale in the autumn. The body is bigger and moves away from the cute three-door hatch, with flared arches, larger windows, ridged roof edges, flatter face and larger lamps. The rough-house “crossover” hatchback is the first Mini with four doors and the option of all-wheel-drive, called ALL4. Prices are yet to be confirmed but it will be the most expensive model in the range. At present, a Cooper S Clubman estate costs just over £17,000. Countryman’s occupants sit slightly higher in a roomier interior. Standard seating is two in the rear but a bench rear seat for three can be had. Each rear seat design has split-folding backrests. A central rail, transporting containers front to rear, makes its debut, similar to that fitted to the new Vauxhall Meriva, previewed here last week. Power comes from the recently announced updated petrol and diesel engines, ranging from 90 horse power in the One D to 184hp in the Countryman Cooper S. BMW says the Countryman’s sector fits between the standard Mini and a sports activity vehicle. The ALL4 models have variable power delivery between the wheels, with up to 50 per cent at the back normally, but extending to 100 per cent in extreme conditions. Dynamic stability control is fitted, with traction control either standard (Cooper S)
